Of buffalo and men, the story of a translocation in Mozambique

In this immersive video report, go behind the scenes of a large-scale operation that mobilised 50 professionals – rangers, vets, drivers – a helicopter and numerous lorries, with the aim of:
✅ boost the current population of this emblematic species ;
✅ contribute to the rehabilitation of a large protected area in the miombo forest.
Last summer, the Fondation François Sommer and Administração Nacional das Áreas de Conservação ANAC (Mozambique’s National Conservation Areas Administration) captured and transported 200 wild buffalo from the Special Reserve of Marromeu to Gilé National Park, 700 km further north, with the financial support of Biofund (Promove Biodiversidad Programme – União Europeia em Moçambique).
It was the largest translocation of buffalo ever carried out in Mozambique!
Several months after the operation, 18 of the 20 animals fitted with GPS collars are still in use. In total, more than 80,000 positions have been recorded since the translocation. The good news is that the buffalo are now well established in 4 groups along the Lice and Mulela rivers.
