Gilé National Park, a Conservation Model Combining Participatory Approach and Public-Private Co-Management in Mozambique.
Since 2007, Gilé National Park has been co-managed by the Fondation François Sommer and the Mozambican government. Located in Zambézia province and covering 439,000 hectares, it’s home to rare ecosystems and biodiversity.
The project promotes a participatory, community-centered conservation model, involving:
-Local governance and management committees
-Community engagement to reduce human-wildlife conflict
-Reintroduction of large fauna like elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeest
-Economic development through ecotourism and local jobs.
Significant efforts include GPS tracking of animals, anti-poaching surveillance, and the rehabilitation of species lost due to war, with future plans to reintroduce lions and rhinos.
The park aims to be a model for sustainable conservation balancing biodiversity protection and community benefit.
